Ever noticed different coloured number plates on Indian roads and wondered what they signify?

India follows a clear and regulated system for classifying number plates based on vehicle usage – private, commercial, electric, and more.

Traditional Vehicle Number Plate

Earlier, number plates were typically issued by car dealerships when a new vehicle was purchased, or were locally made in case of damage or loss. However, this has now changed. As per government regulations, all number plates must be High Security Registration Plates (HSRP).

The RTO assigns the registration number, but the HSRP is manufactured by authorised vendors and affixed by dealerships or authorised fitment centres. These plates include security features such as laser-etched serial numbers, non-removable snap locks, and a colour-coded sticker on the windshield to indicate the vehicle’s fuel type.

What Is an HSRP?

HSRP is a secure version of the vehicle number plate that includes tamper-proof and traceable features. It is mandatory for all vehicles across India, regardless of type or fuel.

Each vehicle must have:

  • A front and rear aluminium plate with a standardized font
  • A unique laser-etched alphanumeric code
  • A non-removable snap lock for added security
  • A colour-coded windshield sticker indicating fuel type (Petrol, Diesel, CNG, EV, etc.)

Note: The fuel-type sticker is applicable only for 3-wheelers, 4-wheelers, and above. Two-wheelers are exempt from this requirement.

Whether it’s a private car, commercial taxi, goods carrier, or electric scooter, every vehicle must carry the HSRP as per government norms.

These features enhance vehicle traceability and safety. Explore more about the benefits of High Security Registration Plates.

Different Types of Number Plates in India

Here are the seven major types of number plates used in India, based on color, usage, and regulatory category.

1. White Number Plate – Private Vehicles

This is the most common type of number plate in India. A white number plate features black text and is used exclusively for private vehicles that are not involved in any commercial activity. Individuals using cars or two-wheelers for personal purposes fall under this category.

2. Yellow Number Plate – Commercial Vehicles

Yellow number plates have black text and are assigned to commercial vehicles such as taxis, trucks, and transport carriers. These vehicles are legally registered for business use and must be operated by drivers holding a valid commercial driving license.

3. Green Number Plate – Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Green number plates are used for electric vehicles, introduced to promote eco-friendly transportation. Private EVs display white text on a green background, while commercial EVs have yellow text on green. This plate helps authorities easily identify and support cleaner mobility solutions.

4. Black Number Plate – Rental or Self-Drive Vehicles

This number plate has yellow text on a black background and is typically used by rental car agencies offering self-drive options. Interestingly, even though the vehicle is used commercially, a private driving license is sufficient to operate it.

5. Red Number Plate – Temporary Registration

A red number plate with white text is issued for vehicles with temporary registration. This is valid for a short period (usually 30 days) until the vehicle receives its permanent registration number from the RTO. It is commonly seen on brand-new vehicles.

6. Blue Number Plate – Foreign Diplomats

Vehicles bearing blue number plates with white text are registered under diplomatic missions or foreign embassies in India. These plates often begin with unique codes like “UN” or “CC” and are used by consular officials, offering them certain legal exemptions.

7. Red Number Plate with Emblem – Government of India

Reserved for the highest offices in the country, these red plates feature no registration number but display a golden Ashoka emblem. They are used by the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Governors, symbolizing official status and protocol.
